Beautifully Disturbing

Amanda Palmer is half of The Dresden Dolls, one of my favorite bands. This is a music video she made with friends to say "Happy Holidays" to everyone:

Beautiful, but so, so disturbing at the same time.

Oh, I know! Vovat linked to that a bit ago, I really like the Vermillion gals. Weird.

Rogers and Hammerstein. Who knew?

I looked up the musical it came from, Carousel and it looks pretty good.

Take away message from this? I'm not sure! It's an interesting video, but then, again, she has an eye for what makes eye-catching visuals. Have you seen the one about Manchester United (or some soccer team) full of drag queens? When I first saw it, was sure until well into that video that the singer was a man, and it's Ms. Palmer. Weird stuff!

All the videos from her recent solo album have been really good. She and Brian Viglione, her band mate in The Dresden Dolls, are both really good at androgyny and cross dressing and the like. The video for "Backstabber" is a good example.

I think the takeaway message might be that songs from old musicals were too eager to dismiss spousal abuse. But I could be wrong.

I've actually bought all of Vermillion Lies' albums recently, and they're quite good.
