Led Zeppelin and I fell in love with it. I've always been a fan of 90's alt rock like The Offspring, so this older, "original" version of such instantly appealed to me as well. After collecting a bunch of Zeppelin CDs I basically started listening only to the classic rock radio stations. In many ways I really ought to be a child of the '70s, because I still really love the music and fashion and think it would have been a really interesting era to live through like my parents did.
The Grateful DeadI've been listening to these guys since I was in the womb. My parents are pretty big Deadheads. They even met at a party before a Dead show in June 1980. It also happened to be Friday the 13th, so my mom always calls that her lucky day. It's cute. But yeah, the Dead. Unlike a lot of kids who ultimately move away from liking any of the music their parents did, I pretty much totally embraced it. I'm definitely not as much of a Deadhead as they were, and I like a lot of other bands better, but this band has been in my life since the beginning and I know a ridiculous amount of their songs. And mostly the live versions instead of the studio versions too. There was actually a question in a Music History class my freshman year where we introduced ourselves and said the first CD/tape/whatever we remember listening to. My answer was "Grateful Dead bootleg tapes."
They Might Be GiantsI was formally introduced to their music during my sophomore year of high school by
patnode, but they didn't become one of my favorite bands until February of last year when I first got to see them live. I've since found that there have been SO many ways I could have been unknowingly exposed to them over the years, that it's just ridiculous and kinda cool. They've done stuff with This American Life, which I used to listen to with my dad on the way home from ski lessons as a little kid. I watched Tiny Tunes almost religiously when I was little, and two of their most well-known songs were turned into music videos for the show. Though I never really watched it when it was on, I was definitely aware of and probably was the target audience for Malcolm in the Middle. Since I really started listening to their entire catalog of music last year they've become a band I completely fell for. The only other bands that have made such an impact on me were Led Zeppelin, Mindless Self Indulgence, and Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears. They're all completely different types of music, but whenever I come back to any of those bands after not listening for a while it always feels like something I didn't even realize was missing is back. It's a weird feeling, but these are bands that will always put me in a good mood when I hear one of their songs, no matter how much I over-listened to them and had to take a little break before.
ChucksChuck Taylor All Stars by Converse. These shoes are so comfy. I got my first pair in 8th grade when I was on a trip to New York with my mom. At the time they were re-gaining popularity in the "alternative" circles, and I desperately wanted to be one of the cool, non-mainstream kids too. My first pair were black, and low tops, but it wasn't long before they were the only shoe that I would ever wear. I even got so lazy with changing into my PE clothing in high school that I ended up leaving my running shoes at home and running in my Chucks every day for a semester. I stuck to black pairs for a while, but I'd always take Sharpies to the rubber and the metal rings that lined the shoelace holes to make them truly mine. My two black pairs also have shoelaces that didn't come with them. Now I have those original black lowtop ones (which I never wear anymore), a pair of black hi-tops that are ridiculously beat up but still get worn really often, a pair of orange low-tops that have disappeared somewhere in my house, a pair of blue low-tops that are fuzzy and I got really cheaply at a sale at Nordstroms, and my newest pair of lime green hi-tops. For everyday wear, I'll usually throw on Chucks unless I'm running really late. Then I wear skate shoes or flip-flops.
PaganismI've been a Pagan of some form or another since I was in the seventh grade. I've always had an interest in mythology/religion and at some point I overheard someone talking about Wicca/Paganism and wanted to learn more about it. Before this, I considered myself a Christian because I would sometimes go to church with my grandmother and my family celebrated Christmas and Easter. I wasn't all that religious myself, and haven't changed that much, although I would consider myself pretty spiritual now. When I started looking into paganism, I immediately realized that this was basically what I'd been believing in already with the polytheistic aspect. There had always been something about the idea of there being so many different religions in the world yet Christianity saying it was the only way to live your afterlife in heaven that bugged me when there were so many good-hearted people in the world who weren't Christian. So, as a kid, I'd decided that really all the gods people had worshiped at one point or another were out there and it didn't matter which you believed in, so long as you believed in something and tried to be a good person. Once I started looking at paganism I realized that the beliefs I already had formed really didn't fit with Christianity at all. I think that a little bit of the appeal was also that I never really gave up the hope that magic of some sort is real. Now I've practiced some, and I'm convinced! I dunno, it seems a little bit like I've always been a little Pagan, but just didn't know it until I really started reading up on religions that weren't The Big Three.
So, that's a little insight into me. Now I've gotta get some sleep before the first day of my internship tomorrow.
