New Years!

Well, for the third year in a row, New Years celebrations were held at Carolyn's cabin in Leavenworth. Like last year, the college kids were given free reign over the double-wide. Also, as Carolyn and my parents are aware of what college kids tend to do at New Years parties, they also generously contributed about four bottles of champagne and a case of slightly better beer to our party.

It was fun: like last year the little brothers built a jump and used the snowmobiles to pull each other around the yard and off the jump on skis. Carolyn's little sister and her friend mostly stayed inside or played near the main house. We went on another snowshoe excursion up the backyard, climbing a very steep hill and then tumbling or sledding down it. Dinner was burritos and salad, made by Carolyn's parents except for the guacamole, which Carolyn was very proud of. Then we realized that we still had about three hours until New Years, so we just goofed around in the double-wide until about 11:30 when we joined the parents and siblings and everyone's friends at the bonfire. There were lots of pictures, sledding, some champagne, and the little brothers throwing fireworks onto the fire. Once they threw the mortar on about thirty minutes into 2009 all the college kids decided it was time to go back inside. We kept goofing around until 3 or 4 am when everyone fell asleep.

The next morning we were planning on leaving relatively early so that a group of us could briefly stop at home and grab some things then head up to my cabin at Whistler for a ski trip. However, when Carolyn and I ran over to the main house to grab our things, we were told that the passes were closed and weren't supposed to open until 4pm. So, we went back to deliver the news to the rest of our friends. Packing halted, and snow gear was brought back out so we could go play in the snow some more. We periodically kept checking the pass reports, and found that Stevens was closed until the morning, and Snoqualmie was not being given a prediction for opening. We decided that even if it opened and we could get home late that night we shouldn't head up to Whistler too, as that would just be too much driving. So we headed into Leavenworth proper to get more food from Safeway and check our phones because there's service in town but not at the cabin.

As soon as we got back, the boys began working on a snow fort outside. Carolyn, Abby and I ran some things over to the main house to be put in the dryer so that people wouldn't freeze and were lucky to not be pelted with snowballs on the way back. We decided that since the boys were being stupid and making the fort a "no girls allowed" deal, we were going to make a snuggly blanket fort inside and decide if it was "Girls Only" later. Eventually most of the girls went to sleep and the guys went back outside to work more on the fort (trying to give it a roof) but they quickly came back in when two of them swore they heard something that could have been a cougar.

The next morning the power was out, but the passes were open, so we packed up, cleaned up as much as we could without running water, and headed out. Even though we started packing at around 9:30 AM, Carolyn, Brian and my car didn't get back until about 2PM. Then we spent about three hours trying to make the Whistler trip work before everyone but me gave up on it. Although, looking back it's probably a good thing we didn't go because I spent all of yesterday sick in bed and that would have been our one day of skiing at Whistler. Today I'm feeling mostly better (as in, I can actually get up and walk around without dying and I'm not falling in and out of delusional dreams all day) so hopefully I'll be a lot closer to 100% tomorrow.
